DEA'sGulfport, MS officeis looking for aBoatCook/Deckhandwho must possess a high school diploma/GED; a valid Driver's License; and a Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC). Prior cooking experience and the appropriate State food service certification must be obtained. Prior marine experience is not necessary but recommended for this entry-level position. Must be self-motivated, detail oriented and safety conscious.

Work Schedule: Work schedule for this position is typically 14/21 days on the vessel and 7/10 days off the vessel.

Deckhand Job Description Duties:
  • Following Captain's orders
  • Responsible for cooking and food handling in safe, efficient, healthful, wholesome and sanitary manner on any vessel within the fleet as designated by the Captain on duty
  • Must maintain kitchen and supply room in a sanitary and organized fashion
  • Knowledge of supplies, equipment, ordering and inventory control
  • Must check quantity and quality of stock received and consumed, and ensure purchase orders are placed in a timely fashion and within budgetary constraints so that ample food is available on board at all times
  • Demonstrate a high standard of personal hygiene
  • Handle problems such as shortage of food items, mistakes, problem in food production or equipment failure
  • Ensure equipment is correctly cleaned, stored and waste is handled according to health and safety regulations
  • The Cook/Deckhand must undertake such other duties as may be determined by management
  • General maintenance of vessel
  • Line Handling
  • Painting
  • Maintaining cleanliness in living areas
  • Maintaining proper watches as described by the Boat Captain
  • Cook/Deckhands frequently work in shifts or can be on-call. They may be away from home for long periods of time


Basic Qualficiations:
  • High school diploma/GED
  • Valid drivers license
  • Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC) is preferred
  • Prior cooking experience and the appropriate State food service certification must be obtained.


Physical Requirements of the Position:
  • Vision that allows to safe maneuvering aboard the vessel in situations that are likely to occur when a boat is in navigation night and day, year around. Depth perception must be adequate for assisting the wheelhouse personnel in navigating in close quarters, including lock or bridge approaches.
  • Work in all weather conditions. Conditions are usually hot, noisy and messy. Workplaces may also be dangerous.
  • Capable of stooping, bending, ascending and descending stairs or ladders safely, sometimes while transporting tools or objects.
  • Ability and know how to use the emergency equipment located on the vessel.
  • May be required to reach into small, poorly accessible areas of machinery; work on equipment that has pressurized or hot components; troubleshoot equipment that is difficult to reach; work in areas that have high noise levels; work below decks in an area that may experience periods of darkness in unusual situations; work in confined and restricted spaces.
  • Lifting up to 75 pounds may be required.
  • It is the responsibility of every DEA crewmember to report to the vessel in a timely manner, fit and ready for duty.
