Job Description
Purpose

Assist project managers on all aspects of transportation planning projects, including research, field work, data analysis, map preparation, drafting reports and documents, and developing solutions to improve bus transit planning and infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership and Direction
  • Receive general instruction on key objectives for execution. Receive direction as needed, and especially complex assignments, modified techniques, and new approaches on assignments with conflicting criteria. Work is completed using advanced (engineering) techniques and (design) principles and is reviewed by more senior staff to ensure application of sound professional judgement. Review work produced by junior staff for quality assurance.

At the Operational and Company Level
  • Prepare materials and attend project related meetings outside of the office with clients, agencies, and the public.

Do the Work
  • Complete planning and engineering analyses, alternatives analysis, and designs with supervision.
  • Organize and conduct field work, including photographs, sketches, counts, and measurements.
  • Assist in the preparation, modification and or review of reports, specifications, construction schedules, environmental impact studies, cost estimates, permits, proposals and designs for projects.
  • Evaluate, interpret, select, and adapt standard techniques, procedures, and criteria to complete work on projects.
  • Aid in monitoring project budgets, timelines, and milestone deliverables.
  • Provide technical guidance to junior staff and peers and aid in the delegation of tasks.
  • Assist in client contact and communication pertaining to specific projects as necessary.
  • Manage project tasks leveraging strong analytical and communication skills.
  • Request, compile, and organize data from a variety of sources.
  • Attend client meetings, presentations, and public hearings.
  • Maintain organized project files.
  • Follows established firm's goals, SOP's, and QA/QC procedures.

Education, Work Experience, Licensure/Certifications, and Technical Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering with transportation emphasis required.
  • Three or more (3+) years of progressive work experience in transportation planning and engineering.
  • EIT required, PE preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience in multimodal transportation engineering and planning, particularly for transit, bicycle, and pedestrian facilities.
  • Experience working with technical design elements including engineering plans, calculations, reports, permit applications, specifications, and engineering estimates.
  • Knowledge of NACTO Transit Street Design Guide and AASHTO Guide for Geometric Design of Transit Facilities on Highways and Streets, as well as transit agency bus stop design guidelines (such as MBTA and RIPTA).
  • Familiarity with Department of Transportation (DOT), transit agency and or, municipal permitting, design and construction standards, policies, and procedures.
  • Familiarity with integration of bus transit with other modes (auto, bicycle, pedestrians) on public streets.
  • Familiarity with bus priority measures Ability to use computer assisted engineering (AutoCAD), design software (AutoCAD Civil 3D) and equipment to prepare engineering and design documents.
  • Advanced proficiency of the use of the standard Microsoft Office Suite of programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook), and other relevant technical programs.
  • Experience with specialized software including ArcGIS, Adobe Creative Suite (SketchUp, Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign) preferred.
  • Valid driver's license.

Physical Demands and Working Environment
  • Primarily indoor professional office environment which may include bright/dim light, noise, fumes, odors, and traffic.
  • Mobility around an office environment.
  • Frequent and prolonged use of standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.
  • Partly outdoor work environment which may include adverse weather conditions, varying temperatures, excessive noise, and/or potential hazards.
  • Occasional lifting or carrying up to 20 pounds.
  • Occasional pushing or pulling up to 20 pounds.
  • Occasional reaching outward or above shoulder.
