Job Description
DEA's Energy Business Unit is currently hiring for an experienced Substation Practice Leader, a director-level position, to lead our Substation Practice and help grow our power delivery and renewable energy business. The location for this position can be flexible among DEA's offices depending on Applicant's qualifications and circumstances, with Oregon and Washington locations preferred.

Position responsibilities are diverse and include working across markets leading the firm-wide Substation Practice. This role will build and enhance the skills and capabilities of the substation engineering team. You will work closely with the Transmission Practice, delivery teams, and Group Leaders to balance workload across markets. You will lead the national branding effort for substation engineering, assessing areas of best practices and technology trends and contributing substantially to business development strategy and pursuits across markets. Some travel for business development and project execution may be required.

Practice Leader responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
  • Lead and grow DEA's Substation Practice
  • Achieve or exceed Practice's annual performance metrics
  • Supervise and mentor Group Leaders
  • Support development of technical papers and presentations that showcase DEA's thought leadership at industry conferences or other events
  • Make recommendations to the Business Leader on practice area technology needs and trends
  • Make recommendations to the Business Leader on entering/exiting markets, strategic investments, and staff performance and compensation
  • Make timely decisions on hiring, promoting, and terminating project delivery staff
  • Successful recruitment and retention efforts
  • Short and long-term workload leveling and forecasting
  • Build local teams and/or leverage existing staff across the company to deliver services that create a superior client experience
  • Serve as Principal in Charge or Project Manager as needed including scoping, budgeting, contract negotiations, execution, and closeout
  • Provide design and project leadership
  • Develop scopes of work, design fee estimates, and support proposal efforts for new projects; may also serve as a pursuit champion
  • Perform quality control reviews of work performed by junior staff
  • Maintain a skills inventory including certifications, licenses, health and safety, etc.
  • Adhere to firmwide tools, processes, and policies including project accounting, workload planning, revenue forecasting, contracting, and quality requirements

Basic Qualifications
  • BS in Electrical Engineering or closely related field
  • Professional Engineer license
  • 10+ years of substation design and power system analysis for power delivery and/or renewable energy applications
  • 5+ years of project management experience for substation projects
  • Strong client and project management skills
  • Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills
  • Alignment with DEA Cultural Drivers

Preferred Qualifications
  • 15+ years of experience, preferably with an engineering consulting firm
  • Experience managing staff, clients, contracts and hiring staff for an engineering consulting firm
  • Client management and business development experience including client relationships with power delivery and renewable energy clients in western United States
  • Project Management Professional (PMP)
